Catherine Green

From administering crucial medication with precision to offering comfort with a gentle touch, Registered Nurse Catherine Green stands among three outstanding healthcare professionals recognised for their exceptional work at Elderly Care in 2024. Her colleagues at our Mermaid Beach Aged Care Residence celebrated her contribution through our monthly Reward & Recognition Program, where team members highlight those who go above and beyond for both residents and fellow staff.

As her peers cast their votes throughout the year, Catherine’s consistent commitment to nursing excellence and compassionate care earned her this prestigious recognition as one of three remarkable team members for the year.

When Catherine opened her inbox on the morning she was informed of her award, she had no idea she was about to receive such a career-defining recognition. As a dedicated registered nurse, her days are typically kept busy ensuring the wellbeing and comfort of residents at our Mermaid Beach Residence. On this occasion, however, she was the one in the spotlight, being recognised for her outstanding commitment to the industry with a prestigious Elderly Care award.

“I was completely surprised,” Catherine recalls. “My manager asked if I had checked my emails that morning, but I was too busy. When I finally opened the message, I was stunned.”

Catherine’s journey into Aged Care began in early 2022 when she relocated from New Zealand, bringing extensive experience in primary healthcare. The transition from a GP practice to Aged Care was a significant shift, and she admits the initial adjustment was challenging.

“At first, it felt overwhelming. Aged Care is a completely different environment, and the workload is intense,” Catherine explains. “But I quickly found that it was incredibly rewarding. I love working with the residents, building relationships, and ensuring they feel valued and cared for.”

Catherine’s passion for Aged Care is evident in the way she describes her work. Catherine believes in creating meaningful connections with residents, particularly those who may not receive regular visitors.

“It’s important to take the time to engage with residents and learn about their lives,” she says. “Even small conversations can make a difference. I want to make their later years as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.”

Catherine credits much of her success to the supportive team around her.

“Having a strong team is essential,” she says. “We rely on each other, share knowledge, and provide support when needed. It makes all the difference.”

She has also built strong relationships with residents’ families, often becoming a trusted point of contact.

“Families appreciate knowing that their loved ones are being well cared for,” she explains. “Keeping them informed and engaged helps build trust and ensures the best outcomes for residents.”

Catherine’s advice for working in Aged Care is simple: perseverance and passion are key.

“The work can be challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding,” she says. “If you have a genuine interest in supporting older people and a willingness to learn, you will find it incredibly fulfilling.”

Catherine’s recognition at the Elderly Care Annual Awards is a testament to the impact she has had in a short time. It highlights the importance of compassionate and dedicated professionals in the Aged Care sector and serves as an inspiration to others considering a career in this essential field.

Catherine’s role involves a wide range of responsibilities, from ensuring residents’ medical needs are met to providing emotional and social support. She notes that no two days are ever the same, and that unpredictability is part of what makes the role so rewarding.

“One day, you might be helping with wound care, and the next, you’re planning activities to bring some joy to the residents,” she says. “It’s about creating a balance between medical care and making sure they feel at home.”

Despite the challenges, Catherine wouldn’t have it any other way. She has seen firsthand the difference compassionate care can make in the lives of older Australians.

“Some residents don’t have family members who visit regularly, so you become a vital part of their support system,” she says. “I try to make sure they feel heard and respected. Even just sitting with them for a few extra minutes can make all the difference.”

Another one of the aspects Catherine enjoys most about her work is hearing the life stories of residents. Many have lived through remarkable historical events and have wisdom to share.

“It’s fascinating to listen to their stories,” she says. “You gain so much perspective from them. They’ve experienced so much in their lives, and being able to provide them with care and companionship is a privilege.”

Beyond the relationships she builds with residents and their families, Catherine finds joy in the camaraderie of her workplace. The support from her colleagues is a vital part of what makes her job fulfilling.

“Aged Care can be physically and emotionally demanding, so having a great team around you is invaluable,” she explains. “We lean on each other, share advice, and find ways to lift each other up when days are tough.”

Looking ahead, Catherine hopes to continue growing in her role and contributing to positive changes in Aged Care. She sees firsthand the growing need for skilled professionals in the sector and encourages others to consider a career in Aged Care.

“There are so many opportunities in Aged Care, and it’s a field where you can truly make a difference,” she says. “If you have a caring nature and a desire to support people in their later years, it’s an incredibly fulfilling career path.”

Catherine’s recognition is a reminder of the profound impact our staff can have. Through dedication, compassion, and a commitment to continuous learning, Catherine exemplifies the very best of the industry – a professional who not only provides exceptional care but enriches the lives of those around her. We are so lucky to have her!
